Welcome to the quiet heart of Japan 🌿

A journal dedicated to the hidden sanctuaries, ancient wisdom, and natural beauty of Japan.

Who we are

We are a married couple traveling across Japan. We walk the paths ourselves, see with our own eyes, and capture the moments that touch our hearts through photography, cinematic video, and words. From deep forests and waterfalls to local festivals and the quiet rituals of Tea and Zen—we explore the “spirit” of Japan that lives beyond the guidebooks.

Our Promise

We deliberately chose Substack to share these stories in a quiet, respectful space. Many of the places we visit are sacred and fragile. They are not meant for mass tourism or fleeting trends. Our mission is to carefully share these precious experiences with a community that seeks depth, silence, and connection.

Schedule & Content

We publish twice a week to bring you different sides of Japan.

  • Tuesday: We share our main in-depth stories. We explore hidden sanctuaries, cultural wisdom, and the history behind them—perfect for a quiet, reflective read.

  • Saturday: The “Life in Japan” Series. We share the “now” of Japan—seasonal shifts, current atmosphere, and candid moments from our life and travels here.

  • Note: We may occasionally adjust the schedule to share special events or timely stories.

Join our Community

  • Free Subscribers: Receive our main stories, visual essays, and inspiration from Japan’s hidden sides.

  • Paid Subscribers: Join our inner circle. You gain access to travel planning support (acting as your local friends), detailed maps, and the ability to request specific destinations or topics for us to cover. You don’t just watch the journey; you become part of it.

Whether you are dreaming of visiting Japan or simply seeking a moment of peace in your day, we are honored to have you with us.

Where to begin your journey

If you are new to SJJ, we recommend starting with these pieces. They capture the essence of the “quiet heart of Japan” we wish to share with you.

Another way to support us ☕

We understand that a monthly subscription isn’t for everyone. If you enjoy our letters and wish to support our travels in a smaller, casual way—perhaps to help with a train ticket or a warm cup of tea on the road—we would be very grateful.
