Lovely story. I found these only a couple of days ago at the Shinjuku Museum of History.

Unagi is my favorite cooked fish in Japan! I used to eat smoked eel in the Netherlands but eel there is no longer so readily available.

What represents summer to me in my home country is “Hollandse Nieuwe,” the Dutch new herring that is extra fat after the cold winter and spring. We eat it raw (slightly cured) and it’s delicious.

Thank you for sharing this. I had never heard of Hollandse Nieuwe before, but it sounds delicious. I would love to try it someday.

I also didn’t know that eel is eaten smoked in the Netherlands. It is interesting that both Japan and the Netherlands have fish that people connect with summer.

Thank you for telling me about a summer taste from your country.

Thanks for this article. I really love this mid-year ritual and even though I am not in Japan, I try to do something similar. I had not seen the minazuki wagashi before. Because I have celiac disease I can't eat anything made with wheat flour, but I found a recipe online for a gluten free version which I might try one day. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge, I really appreciate it.
