A townscape of quiet beauty, flowing memories, and living heritage.
Located in Okayama Prefecture, the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a beautifully preserved district lined with historical buildings that attract visitors from across Japan and abroad.
Thanks to long-standing preservation efforts and a deep commitment to maintaining the townscape, the area has retained its charm to this day. As the beauty of this place continues to be protected, we hope its quiet appeal will reach more international visitors. This article explores the origins, present-day features, and tranquil atmosphere of the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter.
What is the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter?
Stretching along the Kurashiki River, this district is distinguished by rows of white-walled storehouses from the Edo period. Buildings with namako walls (a type of fireproof plaster), tiled roofs, and lattice windows stand side by side, and the scene of willow trees reflected in the river evokes a stillness that feels as though time has paused. Only a 15-minute walk from JR Kurashiki Station, the area is easily accessible even for first-time visitors.
